Thornton was mostly farmland until 1953 when Sam Hoffman purchased land from local families, built and sold 300 homes, thus establishing Thornton. This city, named in honor of former governor of Colorado, Dan Thornton, is located in both Adams and Weld counties. With a population of over 110,000, Thornton was founded predominantly by World War II veterans and their families and grew to become a very popular place to call home.

Holding the title of sixth most populous city in Colorado, Thornton offers good access to education, transportation systems, health care, has a low crime rate, and a multitude of recreational facilities. Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) serves Thornton, providing bus service between Thornton, Denver and surrounding several cities for convenient commuting and affordable options.  Because of its location as the easternmost city in the north Denver area, Thornton is the closest city to Denver International Airport.

Residents of Thornton are well equipped to tackle any boredom with exercise and recreational activities in the openness of the outdoors. Thornton has close to 1,000 acres of land boasting of dozens of parks and recreational centers. There are 230 acres of open space for hiking, jogging, dog walking, and exploring, as well as a popular public local 18-hole golf course.  There are 25 major parks and sporting facilities in Denver for youth sports and adult leagues to enjoy.

Every year Thornton plays host to three festivals,  Thornton Fest held in May, Harvest Fest in September, and Winter Fest in December. Thornton Fest features, car shows, carnival rides, wall climbing, live music shows, and of course, none other than the National Canine Frisbee Competition! Harvest Fest emphasizes the community spirit of Thornton and hosts pancake breakfast, fishing derby and salsa tasting competition, to name a few activities, which keep event goers very entertained.  Winter Fest ushers in the holiday with Santa’s Village, a holiday market place, and ice-skating on a local frozen pond all day and into the evening.
