Welcome to Golden, Colorado!

Never a Dull Moment

Golden is very well known as the home of Coors Brewery, the largest single-site brewery in the world, not the country, but the world. Adolph Coors founded the brewery in 1873 on the banks of Clear Creek and the company has been using Rocky Mountain spring water ever since. Coors and Golden have grown up together over the last 100 years. If you’re a history buff or just enjoy free samples, you can be one of the 300,000 people that tour Coors Brewery each year. The place everyone wants to see when he or she comes to Golden is the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum. Were you thinking of some place else? We’ll get to that place in a moment. What other city boasts not one but two Goodwill moon rocks collected during the Apollo 17 mission? You’ll find those rocks (as well as fossils and meteorites) at the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.  Plus, you’ll find very smart people walking around the Colorado School of Mines, as it is one of the top science and engineering schools in the country.

Of course, there is more to Golden than just beer and rocks. The National Renewal Energy Laboratory (NREL) calls Golden home, as does the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC). NEIC is responsible for measuring the magnitude of earthquakes and pinpointing their epicenters. These are just two examples of the many employers who have chosen to locate in Golden because of the quality of the town, its highly respected educational institutions, and close proximity to Denver.

Around the holidays, the town of Golden creates an authentic hometown Christmas experience called “Olde Golden Christmas”, which includes  a community candlelight walk attracting thousands of carolers each year. In a crowd that size, everyone sounds good and no one cares if you’re a bit off key. The Olde Golden Christmas also features free horse drawn carriage rides, holiday parades, free admission to museums, and holiday lights and art. It is sure to cure the Scrooge in anyone.

The grave of Buffalo Bill is just up the hill from Golden, near the Boettcher Mansion – a popular spot for weddings and receptions. Both are located on Lookout Mountain, which is appropriately named. On a clear day, you can see for miles. Railroad buffs will enjoy spending the day at the Colorado Railroad Museum, one of over 20 different cultural attractions that make Golden home.

Officially dedicated in 1998, the Clear Creek Whitewater Park was built for recreational canoeing and kayaking. The course is one quarter of a mile of adventurous, splashing fun. Divided into sections, the course is 800 feet in length and shaped by natural boulders. Be warned: kayaking is a form of exercise. But just like Golden, it is a lot of fun. All of this makes Golden a great place to call home.
